Natasha patted her face dry, then applied some night cream. They’d made it safely to Island Park. Her dad had been thrilled with the idea of them staying for a while. Natasha was so grateful to Tony, asleep downstairs on the couch. He’d taken off work with little notice to be here for her and their children. Maybe in this beautiful spot they could reconnect and talk through their issues. The last thing she wanted was to hear why he’d given up on their marriage and turned to that Sarah woman, but they needed to talk it through if they were ever going to have a chance.
Walking from the upstairs bathroom into her bedroom, her eyes were drawn to the open window. She was certain she’d closed it. Standing next to the window, the filmy curtains swirling around his tall form: Alex.
Natasha gasped. She drew in her breath and started to shout, “To—”
Alex leaped across the room, covered her mouth with his hand, and pushed her against the wall. He softly closed the door next to her then gazed down. “You shouldn’t have run.”
He’d found them. Safety slipped away. There was no sanctuary in these woods. Alex was here. The man who was being paid to torment and kill her was inches away. Her pulse accelerated until she had to gulp for oxygen.
Alex studied her. “If you scream, and Tony or your dad come, I will kill them. You don’t want that, do you?”
Natasha couldn’t move or speak the way he was holding her, but she tried to shake her head and hoped her eyes conveyed the message that she’d do anything to protect her dad and Tony.
“That’s what I thought.” He stepped back and lowered his hand. “Don’t. Scream.”
Natasha grabbed the doorknob, every bit of her wanting to run. But where would she run? If she made it to Jace and Lily’s room across the loft, she’d endanger them. If she ran downstairs, she’d put Tony and her dad in harm’s way.
Alex extended his fingers and waited. His eyes begged her to accept the non-threatening invitation.
When her only movement was to clutch the doorknob tighter he tilted his head to the side and said, “Please.”
The look in his dark eyes was a mixture of pleading and desire. Even though her head was screaming to run, her heart was telling her that the only chance to protect her family was doing what Alex asked. Like a child reaching out to a beautiful cobra, Natasha placed her hand in his palm. What am I doing? Gently, he tugged her close. Securing his arms around her waist, Alex lifted her onto her tiptoes and aligned their bodies together. The room grew warmer. No, this is wrong. So wrong.
With a smile on his lips, he lowered his head until their mouths connected. Slowly, deliberately, the demand of his lips increased. Her mouth responded. Her head swam. She wanted to pull away, but her body rebelled.
He released her mouth and lowered her from her toes, but didn’t relax his grip on her waist.
